Channels

Channels split a server into places for different things. Text channels hold messages, voice channels hold calls, and poster boards hold widgets. Categories group them in the sidebar. This page covers all three kinds and every channel setting.

The three kinds of channel#

Text channel
A running conversation. Shown with a speech bubble icon. Messages, files, reactions, pins, and search all live here. See Messages.
Voice channel
A room you join to talk, turn on your camera, or share your screen. Shown with a headphones icon, with everyone currently in it listed underneath. Click it to join. See Voice and video.
Poster board
A freeform canvas of widgets (polls, countdowns, embeds, stats, and more) instead of a message feed. Great for an info or welcome page. See Poster boards.

Creating a channel#

You need the Manage Channels permission.

  1. Click the + next to the server name and choose Create Channel, click the + beside a category, or right-click a category and choose Create Text Channel or Create Voice Channel.
  2. Type a name and pick a type: Text, Voice, or Poster Board. The type starts on whatever that category mostly holds.
  3. Click Create.

Channel names are 1 to 40 characters of lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces become dashes and capitals become lowercase automatically.

Example

Typing Looking For Group! creates looking-for-group. The exclamation mark is dropped.

Categories#

Categories are the small headings (like "Text Channels") that group channels in the sidebar.

Channel settings#

Right-click a channel and choose Edit Channel, or hover it and click the gear. You need Manage Channels. There are two tabs: Overview and Permissions.

Name, category, and topic#

The topic is a short line shown in the header next to the channel name, like "Where the squad hangs out". Use it to say what the channel is for.

Slowmode Text#

Makes each member wait between messages. Options run from 5 seconds to 6 hours.

Example

Set #announcements-chat to 30 seconds during a big launch so the channel stays readable, then turn it Off afterward.

Lock Channel Text#

Makes the channel read-only for everyone except people with Manage Channels. Use it to freeze a heated conversation instantly, without editing every role's permissions and then having to put them all back.

Auto-delete old messages Text#

Deletes messages older than a set age: 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year. The default is Never.

Example

A #lfg channel where posts go stale after a day: set auto-delete to After 1 day so the channel only ever shows current requests.

Age-restricted (18+)#

Marks the channel as adult-only. Teen accounts (13 to 17) can't open it, nor can anyone signing in from a region whose law requires real age verification. Images posted in it are blurred behind a click-to-view warning for members who have Blur Sensitive Media on.

Bitrate Voice#

The audio quality of the channel, from 8 to 256 kbps. The default, 64 kbps, sounds clear for speech.

User Limit Voice#

The most people who can be in the channel at once: no limit, or 2 to 99. Anyone with Manage Channels can still join a full channel, so moderators are never locked out of their own server.

Example

Make a duo-queue voice channel with a limit of 2 so it's always obvious when a pair is busy.

Deleting a channel#

Right-click the channel and choose Delete Channel (Manage Channels).

Copying a channel ID#

Right-click a channel and choose Copy Channel ID. Bots and some poster board widgets ask for it.
