Using Sunflare

Direct messages and friends

Direct messages are conversations outside any server: one-on-one, or a group of up to 25 people. This page covers starting and organizing them, calling from them, and friends.

Opening your DMs#

Click the speech bubble at the top of the server rail. The sidebar switches to your conversations, most recent first, with these at the top:

Friend Requests
Send requests and see incoming and outgoing ones. A red number shows how many are waiting for you.
New Message
Start a conversation with one person, or several for a group.
New Folder
A folder to group conversations in. See Folders.

The All / DMs / Groups tabs above the list filter it. You can hide those tabs in Appearance.

Starting a conversation#

  1. Click New Message, or use the search box at the top of your DMs.
  2. Type a friend's name, or any username.
  3. Pick one person for a DM, or several to create a group.

You can also right-click anyone's name (in a server, a message, or a voice channel) and choose Message.

Group DMs#

A group DM is a small private chat with up to 25 people, including you. It has no roles or channels: everyone in it is equal.

Example

For a weekend trip: New Message, pick four friends, then name the group "Lake Trip" in Group Settings and pin the cabin address so it's easy to find later.

Calls#

Use the phone button (voice) or camera button (video) in the DM header. Everyone else in the conversation gets a ringing call with Join and Decline. Call controls work exactly like voice channels; see Voice and video.

One-on-one calls try to connect directly between the two of you first (direct (P2P)), falling back to a Sunflare voice region if that isn't possible.

Messages in DMs#

Everything in Messages works in DMs: files, GIFs, reactions, replies, editing, and search. Two differences:

Folders#

Folders keep a long DM list tidy.

Closing a DM#

Right-click a conversation and choose Close DM to hide it from your list. Nothing is deleted, and the other person isn't told. The conversation comes back, with its full history, as soon as a new message arrives in it.

Friends#

Being friends makes it easier to find each other and to get past privacy settings like Friends Only.

Sending a request#

If they had already sent you a request, sending one back makes you friends immediately.

Answering requests#

The Incoming list in Friend Requests shows people who want to be your friend, each with Accept and Decline. Outgoing shows requests you've sent, which you can cancel. The same button on someone's profile card or right-click menu changes to match: Add Friend, Cancel Friend Request, Accept Friend Request, or Remove Friend.

Removing a friend#

Right-click them, or open their profile, and choose Remove Friend. You're removed from each other's friends lists.

Blocking#

Right-click someone and choose Block. They can't DM you or send friend requests, and their messages are hidden from you everywhere, including servers you share. Full details in Safety and age rules.
