Running a server

Moderation

The tools for keeping a server healthy: timeouts, kicks, bans, purging messages, voice moderation, member reports, pruning, and the audit log. Every one of them needs a permission, and you can only act on people whose highest role is below yours.

Where the tools are#

Right-click a member (their name in a message, the member list, or a voice channel). Moderators see extra actions below the usual ones. You only see the ones your permissions allow.

Timeouts#

A timeout stops someone sending messages and joining voice in this server until it ends. They can still read, and their DMs aren't affected. It's the right first step for most problems: it ends the situation without removing anyone.

Durations: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 1 day, or 1 week. Choose Remove Timeout to end one early.

Example: a fair escalation
  1. First problem: a friendly word, or delete the message.
  2. Again: a 10-minute timeout with a note about which rule.
  3. Again: a 1-day timeout.
  4. Still going: kick or ban.

Writing your steps into your server rules means nobody is surprised.

Kicking#

Remove from Server takes someone out of the server. They can come back with any working invite. Good for someone who needs to cool off, not for someone you never want back.

Their roles are removed along with them, so if they rejoin they start with none: a kicked moderator can't walk back in with their old permissions.

Banning#

Ban from Server removes someone and stops them rejoining, through any invite, until they're unbanned. Banned users can't be added back with Add Member either. See and lift bans in Server Settings → Bans. Their roles are removed too, so if they're unbanned and rejoin, they start with none.

Purging messages#

Deletes a member's most recent messages in the current channel in one go: right-click them, choose Purge Messages, and enter how many (up to 100 at a time). Other people's messages in between are skipped.

Example

A raid account posts 40 spam links in #general. Ban it, then right-click its name in #general, Purge Messages, 50.

Voice moderation#

Right-click someone in a voice channel:

Server Mute / Server Deafen
Switches their microphone off (and, for deafen, their sound).
Move To
Moves them to another voice channel you can access.
Disconnect
Removes them from voice.

Everyone also has personal controls (volume, mute for just you, hide their video) on the same menu. See Voice and video.

Reports#

When someone reports a message or member in your server, the report comes here as well as to Sunflare's staff, so you can act on it without waiting. Each report moves through Open, Reviewing, and then Resolved or Dismissed.

Pruning inactive members#

Removes members who haven't signed in to Sunflare for 7, 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, or a year. Click Check How Many first to see the number, then Prune.

The audit log#

The last 100 administrative actions in the server: who did what, to whom, and when. Recorded actions include:
