Safety and age rules
How Sunflare keeps people safe, and what you can do yourself: protections for teen accounts, age-restricted content, automatic image checks, blocking, and how to spot the most common scams.
Teen accounts#
Accounts whose birthday makes them 13 to 17 get extra protection automatically. These are how the account starts, not settings you have to find:
- Direct Messages start at Friends Only, and Friend Requests at Friends of Friends. Teens can change these in Privacy, the same as anyone.
- No age-restricted content. Age-restricted servers can't be joined, and age-restricted channels don't appear at all.
- Blur Sensitive Media is always on and can't be turned off.
These protections lift automatically on the 18th birthday. Nobody under 13 can have an account.
Age-restricted content#
Servers and channels with adult content must be marked age-restricted (see servers and channels). They're hidden from teen accounts.
Some places have laws requiring real age verification for adult content: Texas, Mississippi, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. A birthday someone types in doesn't meet that bar, so Sunflare blocks age-restricted content for everyone signing in from those places, whatever their age.
Blur Sensitive Media#
Uploaded images are checked automatically, and ones detected as explicit are blurred behind a click-to-view warning, as is every image in an age-restricted channel. Adults can turn this off in Privacy; it's locked on for teens.
Child safety scanning#
Every uploaded image is checked against databases of known child sexual abuse material using industry-standard hash matching. A confirmed match suspends the account and blocks its IP immediately, and is reported to the relevant authorities. This is the one place enforcement is fully automatic, because of how serious it is.
Blocking#
Right-click someone, or open their profile, and choose Block.
- Neither of you can DM the other or send friend requests, and they can't add you to group DMs.
- Their messages are hidden from you everywhere, including servers you share.
- They can't see your activity.
- They aren't told, though they may notice they can't message you.
Unblock people from Settings → My Account → Blocked Users, or from their profile.
Spotting scams#
Most account thefts and scams on chat apps follow a few patterns:
- "I'm from Sunflare staff, verify your account"
- Staff never ask for your password, 2FA codes, or for you to scan a QR code. Real staff have a shield badge on their profile; a display name saying "Staff" means nothing. See Your profile card.
- "Scan this QR code to get a free Cosmos"
- Scanning a login QR code signs someone else into your account. Only scan the code on your own screen.
- "I accidentally reported you, message this person to fix it"
- A classic. Reports don't work that way. Ignore it and block.
- Free gifts, giveaways, or "test my game" downloads
- Links to fake login pages or malware. Sunflare shows where a link really goes before you open it; read it.
