Using Sunflare
Messages
Everything you can do with a message: write it, mention people, attach files and GIFs, reply, react, edit, pin, delete, and find it again later. It works the same in server channels and DMs, except where noted.
Sending a message#
Type in the box at the bottom of a text channel or DM and press Enter.
| Keys | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enter | Send. |
| Shift + Enter | New line without sending. |
| @ then a name | Opens the mention list. ↑ ↓ to choose, Enter or Tab to insert, Esc to close. |
A message can be up to 5,000 characters. Text is sent exactly as you type it; there's no bold or italic formatting syntax, so asterisks and underscores show up as themselves.
While you type, other people in the conversation see "yourname is typing..." under their message box. It disappears a few seconds after you stop.
Mentions#
Type @username to mention someone. They get a notification (depending on their notification levels), and the message is highlighted for them. Mentions are matched by username, among the people who can see that conversation: the server's members, or the DM's participants.
@leo @jun raid starts in 10 pings both of them. Mentions of you also collect in the Inbox.
@everyone and @here#
@everyone and @here ping the whole server. Only people with the Mention @everyone, @here permission can use them, and that permission is off for everyone by default. They have to be lowercase and on their own, so @everyonelovescats isn't a mass ping.
Files, images, and video#
Three ways to attach:
- Click + at the left of the message box and pick files.
- Drag files onto the message box.
- Paste: a screenshot or a copied image goes straight in with Ctrl + V.
Attached files wait in a preview row above the box until you send, so you can remove one first or add a message to go with them. Up to 10 files go in one message.
| Plan | Largest file |
|---|---|
| Free | 50 MB |
| Cosmos | 250 MB |
| Cosmos Pro | 1 GB |
Uploads never expire on any plan. There's also an hourly total, 5 GB per hour on Free and 10 GB on a paid plan, so a runaway script can't flood the servers; normal use never comes close.
GIFs, stickers, and emoji#
The smiley button at the right of the message box opens the media picker, with three tabs:
- GIFs
- Search a GIF library and click one to send it right away.
- Stickers
- Stickers you've uploaded. They send as a large image on their own.
- Emoji
- All standard emoji by category, plus a Custom category with emoji you've uploaded. Clicking one inserts it into your message.
Uploading your own emoji, stickers, and sounds is covered in Emoji, stickers, and sounds.
Links and previews#
Web addresses become clickable automatically. Many links also get a preview card with the page's title, description, and image. Sunflare invite links show an invite card with the server's name and a Join button, and Spotify track links show a track card.
To post a link without a preview, wrap it in angle brackets:
Patch notes: <https://example.com/patch-1-2> Shows a clickable link, no preview card. The brackets themselves aren't shown.
Replying#
Hover a message and click Reply, or right-click it and choose Reply. A bar above the message box shows who you're replying to; click its × to cancel. Your message appears with a small quote of the original, so people can follow the thread even in a busy channel.
Reactions#
Hover a message and click the smiley, or right-click and choose Add Reaction, then pick an emoji. Reactions show under the message with a count; hover one to see who reacted. Click an existing reaction to add yours to it, click it again to take yours back, or use the small + at the end of the row to add a different one.
In servers, some messages give out a role when you react. Those are reaction roles.
Editing#
Right-click your own message and choose Edit Message. Edited messages show (edited) next to the time. You can only edit your own messages, and an edit goes through the same checks as sending (AutoMod, slowmode, and so on).
Deleting#
Right-click a message and choose Delete Message.
- You can always delete your own messages.
- In a server, people with Manage Messages can delete anyone's. Moderators can also purge a member's recent messages in bulk.
Pinning#
Pinned messages are kept in a list you can open from the pin button in the channel header. Good for rules, links, and decisions people will want to find later.
- In a server, pinning needs Manage Messages.
- In a DM or group DM, anyone in it can pin.
- A channel or DM holds up to 50 pins. Unpin something to make room.
Other message actions#
- Copy Text
- Copies the message's text.
- Copy Message ID
- Copies its unique ID, for reports, bots, and Support.
- Report
- Sends it to moderators. See Reporting and support.
Muting a person#
Right-click someone's name and choose Mute. Their messages are dimmed and labeled "muted" for you, so you can scroll past them. It only affects your view on this device, and they aren't told. For something stronger, block them.
Searching messages#
Click the magnifying glass in the channel header to search the channel or DM you have open. Type words to look for, and narrow it down with filters:
| Filter | Finds |
|---|---|
| From | Messages sent by one username. |
| Mentions | Messages that @mention one username. |
| Has | Any, a File, or an Embed (a link preview). |
| Since / Until | A date range. Until includes the whole day you pick. |
| Sort | Newest first, or most relevant first. |
To find the spreadsheet dex shared last month in #planning: open the channel, search with From dex, Has File, and Since the first of last month. You can also search with only filters and no words.
Catching up#
When you open a channel with new messages, a banner says how many there are, with a button to mark them read, and a line marks where the new ones start. The Inbox gathers unread channels and mentions from every server and DM in one place.
