Running a server

Server settings

A tour of every tab in Server Settings: what each option does and where it's explained in depth. Open it from the server menu (click the server's name) with Server Settings.

You need Manage Server (or Administrator) to open Server Settings from the menu. Some tabs need other permissions too, and you only see what you can use.

Overview#

Server Name
1 to 60 characters.
Description
A short line about the server, shown where it's listed (like Discover).
Server Icon
The picture on everyone's server rail. Up to 10 MB. Without one, the server's initials are shown.
Server Banner
Shown across the top of the channel list for everyone in the server. Remove takes it away.

Click Save Changes when you're done.

Invites#

The main invite link, Regenerate Code, a custom invite code (Cosmos Pro), and extra one-off links with expiry and use limits. See Invites and joining.

Access#

Welcome#

Greet people the moment they join, and give them a role so they land somewhere useful.

Welcome Message
Posts a short note in a channel you choose whenever someone joins. Use {user} for their name and {server} for the server's.
Auto-Role
A role given to everyone as they join. You can only pick a role below your own highest one.
Example
Welcome to {server}, {user}! Grab your game roles in #roles and say hi in #general.

When kai joins Night Owls, #welcome shows: "Welcome to Night Owls, kai! Grab your game roles in #roles and say hi in #general."

Members#

Prune inactive members. See Pruning inactive members.

Roles#

Create, edit, order, and delete roles (Manage Roles). See Roles and permissions.

Bots#

Create Bot makes a new bot that joins this server right away. Add Existing Bot adds someone else's bot with its ID or invite link.

To rename a bot, change its avatar or token, or delete it, use the Developer Portal in your own Settings. Only a bot's owner can do those, so a server you merely manage can't hijack or destroy someone else's bot. See Writing bots.

AutoMod#

Blocked words, invite links, all links, and mention limits. See AutoMod and raid protection.

Bans#

Everyone banned from the server, with a button to unban. See Banning.

Reports#

Reports from members about messages and people in this server. See Reports.

Audit Log#

The last 100 administrative actions. See The audit log.

Danger Zone#

Only the owner sees this tab.

Transfer Ownership#

Hands the server to another member, who gets full control, including deleting it.

  1. Click Transfer Ownership.
  2. Choose the new owner from the server's members (bots can't own servers), and enter your password.
  3. Confirm once more. The change takes effect immediately and appears in the Audit Log.
Example

You're stepping back from running Night Owls. Create an "Admin" role with Manage Server, Manage Channels, Manage Roles, Kick, and Ban, give it to yourself so you can keep helping, then transfer ownership to the friend who'll run it from now on.

Delete Server#

Removes the server for everyone.
